Indoor vs Outdoor Balls

Updated September 2026 · 5 min read

Bring the wrong ball and the session is worse before it starts. The two ball types aren't a style preference — they're different engineering for different surfaces, and the difference is bigger than most new players expect.

The physical difference

Play an indoor ball outdoors and the wind owns it. Play an outdoor ball indoors and it skids and cracks against a surface it was never built for.

The two outdoor standards

Outdoor tournament play runs on two balls, and you should know both:

If your local ladder or league uses one, practice with it. Touch is ball-specific.

Cracking: the eternal problem

Outdoor balls crack — cold mornings, hard courts, hard overheads. The Selkirk Pro S1 attacked this directly with a 38-hole rotational molding design and a crack-resistance warranty. They cost more per ball; they can also outlast a sleeve of cheaper ones. If you're going through balls fast, the math can favor them.
